There is no perfect journal — the right one is simply the one you'll actually open. A plain lined notebook with a soft cover works beautifully: nothing precious, nothing to ruin, just pages that will hold whatever comes out.
Look for one that lies flat when open, with paper thick enough that ink doesn't bleed through, and a size that fits on a nightstand or in a bag. Small enough to keep close is better than big and beautiful on a shelf.
